Munduk Waterfall

Entrance Fee: 10,000 IDR (~1 USD)

Munduk Falls
The tiny white curtain at the corner of the woods.

We were back on the road after buying some snacks to survive the morning. We hunted for Munduk Falls (we thought that Oka was not well-versed with the places that he had to stop several times and ask people around for directions).

To reach Munduk Falls, we had to do a little bit of trekking, perhaps just 20 minutes, but it was slippery since it must have rained earlier. There were large Jackfruits hanging from the trees as we walked in the woods.

Halfway to the falls, we could clearly hear the waters splashing down and we were just excited to see how it looked like. Few minutes later, tadah, the small white curtain showed up not-so-deep in that corner of the forest. The sound of water was just so refreshing.

The foot of the falls was filled with soil and some smooth stones that were arranged in a leveled setting. From where we were standing, there was a cemented short wall with stairs that created lower levels from the foot of the falls. It looked like part-falls, part-dam. I just prefer natural or authentic surroundings.

Munduk Falls Face
The “dam” part of the falls, visitors made funny of the sculpture’s nose.

We attempted to get near for a better photo but the water was cold, not icy cold but very cold, for our standards. Brrr.

Finally, our next activity was lunch but it was just few minutes past 10 AM. We drove to the designated buffet lunch place named Mentari Restaurant, which was also close to our next stop, Beratan Lake. We were so eager to fill our tummies that we could eat a whole chicken but the restaurant was not ready yet although it was already open. Oka helped us ask about any available food but the owner said the buffet lunch will start at 11:30 and asked us to wait a little. A little? Oops. For a very hungry person, I think even 10 minutes would feel very long. Well, we just said okay but we had it in our minds to look for plan B. We were okay to let go of the chance to eat buffet.

In front of the Mentari Restaurant is the Beratan Lake. It was a perfect place to forget about waiting and to start appreciating the view.

Beratan Lake

  • Buffet Lunch: 120,000 IDR (~10 USD)
Walkway
A broken walkway reaching out to the horizon.

We walked towards the side of the lake, still looking for a place to eat nearby. At that time, we could eat just about anything. We could not calm our internal pets anymore. But to no avail. ‘It is all in the mind,’ we thought.

Wooden Walkway
The wooden walkway that looks like it was going to collapse anytime but produced great shots.

We chose to get good photos of the lake instead and we rested on the wooden, as-if-about-to-collapse bridges that formed a square. Surprisingly, the photos came out great. We imagined the scene to be in a far away and peaceful village with just the sound of water, birds, and wind. This was one of those times you would think that imperfection can be beautiful. And we were just chilling, having no problems whatsoever. We forgot about our hunger for a little while (but subconsciously, we were checking our watches every now and then).

Chilling Dad on walkway
Dad just savoring the moment.

It was not 11:30 yet but we started dragging our feet back to the restaurant. When we went in, we saw people already lining up for the buffet. Aha, it was adrenaline moment for us. Not a minute to waste.

Just a couple of minutes later, rain started to pour. Hard. Good timing I would say. The sky was aware how hungry we were and how desperately we needed to eat but gave us sympathy during its watch when we had to wait for our fuel to be ready.

Ulun Danu Temple

  • Entrance Fee: 30,000 IDR (~2.20 USD)
Ulun Danu Temple
The temple after the rain, in harmony with nature.

It was a wet day for us but it did not stop us from visiting the Ulun Danu Temple. Along with Uluwatu and Tanah Lot, Ulun Danu is similarly famous because of the location. The temple is just a few minutes drive from our buffet lunch place, Mentari Restaurant. So far, we were still in the northern part of Bali, quite far from home.

Ulun Danu Park
The beautiful park before the actual Ulun Danu location.

By then, the rain has mellowed down, although still drizzling. We continued to check out the temple, which has a beautiful park before its actual location.

Ulun Danu Right
We entered from the right side of the temple.

Usually after a rain, the colors of the surroundings look cooler and more vibrant to the eyes. Greens are greener and blues are bluer. Plus, not too contrasty. I simply like it.

Ulun Danu Left
We passed by the temple and viewed it on its left side.
Ulun Danu Behind
The view almost behind the temple.
Park Exit
The other part of the beautiful park upon exit.
