Penang, Malaysia

Penang is that city in Malaysia greatly known for Street Art and history. Of course, I wouldn’t let it pass, plus the fact that this region in Malaysia is one of those I really wanted to visit including Langkawi. Thus, this leg covers both cities.

Penang is located northwest of Kuala Lumpur but we took the plane to save time since we departed from the Philippines at that time, with Kuala Lumpur as layover. I knew this trip wouldn’t be on the adventurous side because it boasts mostly about historical details and art. It would be sort of a relaxing trip, however, the weather was not so much in favor of our timing but we still managed to enjoy the old city.

We arrived in Penang at almost 9 PM already via the airport transit bus at 5.40 MYR only and we headed straight to the hotel, which did not have stairs by the way so it is not advisable for the elderly. Good thing my Dad is still strong so it wasn’t a challenge for him, only a challenge for our luggage. The location of the hotel is good because it is in one of the famous streets in Penang and major landmarks are just walking distance from the hotel.

Since we arrived late in the evening, we were so hungry and we had to scout for food places nearby. We found one stall which offered Nasi Dalca, a kind of chicken curry, which was tasty and with big servings of rice. Done for the night!

The only food we could find late at night but it was a good meal.

The first day was planned to explore Penang Hill and try the unique funicular train that climbs a steep mountain to the top of the hill. I just like unique trains, cable cars, ATVs, and some forms of flying like skydiving, paragliding, parasailing, hot air balloon, etc.

We took bus #204 from near our hotel to the Penang Hill Train station, which was just 1.5 MYR. The round-trip train fee was 30 MYR for adults.

However, we came during the rainy season so it was so foggy that we could not see the city view from the top. We just enjoyed the food, hot drinks, and the nearby scenes.

Since there was nothing else we could see, do, or go, we headed back down to base to take bus #204 bound to our next destination, Kek Lok Si Temple.
