Tokyo, Japan

Shibuya

Hachiko
Hachi meaning eight and a suffix kō meaning affection, Hachiko was an Akita dog remembered for his remarkable loyalty to his owner which continued for ten years after his owner’s death.

I knew that Shibuya was on our list because of Hachiko. I have forgotten about its famous scramble crossing, which was featured in several movies. When we got out of the train station, it was the scramble crossing that welcomed us. We were so amused that we could not get enough of the scene. We almost forgot why we were there. Sorry Hachiko!

Before Crossing
The people were all lined up ready to attack the roads.
During Crossing
And then the scrambling begins…for just a minute. Flash flood!

Tokyo Sky Tree

SkyTree
The Skytree at 634 meters, is a new television broadcasting tower and landmark of Tokyo. It is the tallest in Japan.

Since it was night time, we did not opt to get inside the observation decks. First and foremost, it was costly at 2060 JPY (~20 USD) just for the first deck. Additional 1030 JPY (~10 USD) to get to the second deck. ‘Hmm, I am okay…to just view it from the outside. No, thanks.’

Secondly, it was already late. There was a queue of about half hour and we won’t be able to maximize the costly ticket in case we decided to go. So it was a no for us.

But yes, it was actually the price that stopped us from going in even if there was no queue. =)

A closer look of Tokyo Sky Tree. We were content with just the exterior.

On our first day, I began to fall in love with the country. This made me more excited to complete the next destinations in our itinerary. We did not mind our numb legs, overwhelming train stations, amazing-race approach, and costly meals.

MRT-Map
“You are here.” “Where?!” This was kind of our bestfriend during the Tokyo self-guided tour. But most importantly, we still needed the pocket-WIFI to easily know the best routes.
Train Station
In the beginning, looking at all these signs was absolutely overwhelming but after a while, we got used to it. Amazing system!
Tokyo Steps
Courtesy of Mikee. Tokyo tour had the most number of steps in our entire trip.

In my mind right now, the first 3 things I love about Japan, after just the first day, were:

  • Cold Weather (from 12-24 degree Celsius)
  • Very helpful and friendly people
  • Awesome high-tech always-warm toilets!
Toilets
This is how most of the toilets in Japan are. No wonder we kept on taking toilet breaks. Hihi.
